Where to begin? And how much do I disclose? Weighing up an impossible balance of professional and personal, I have opted to make this short and sweet.
The 11th Femme Filmmakers Festival, in theory, is a golden period of the film calendar as far as this very editor is concerned. And to so many of you, of course. The last month before the 10 day online event is always the toughest. That’s the nature of the beast. But this year – teamed up with all manner of other aspects within my own life – has been agonising. The toughest yet. I shall not get into details, but please take my word for it.
As the weeks turned to days and will soon be hours, the overall preparation has suffered rather than progressed how it should have. The world has been less responsive and far busier and more distracted this year is a generalisation I can offer for a gruelling set of months. But it goes far deeper than that of course. In simple terms, time is running out.
Due to an extremely low turn-out for our online screenings, I have had to make the incredibly nerve-jangling decision to cancel a third of those online screenings. Meaning each of the 38 short films will now be screened online twice rather than then original three times. It is the later of the sessions that suffers here (ie those screenings that were beyond 11pm UK time), with a few alterations to just a few original times. These will be fed back to the relevant parties (filmmakers, audience) as soon as possible. On behalf of the Femme Filmmakers Festival I offer a genuine apology for this.
Some of the other planned events / roundtables / podcasts / watchalongs will also be pulled from the roster. I – or we – just don’t have the capacity. But in spite of this personal pain that comes with this news, the show must go on. Check out the updated screening details here.
