Back in January, perhaps February, I started throwing out there the notion of prepping super early for this year’s Femme Filmmakers Festival. I mean, in many ways, we simply had to. Last year’s gigantic 10th year event, with a record high 63 short films, was a strenuous but exhilarating 4 months of preparation. But we made it.
So what’s different this year? Well, other than the sensible approach of kicking things of earlier this time around, we have decided the move the 10 day event itself to August. The 11th edition will run from Friday 14th right through until Sunday 23rd August. Two of the main reasons for this are the audience clash with some of the early fall festivals (namely, TIFF) and also given the large participation of students (both filmmakers and audiences) we don’t want to encourage them to skip class to attend the screenings of the their own short film.
The short film submissions are now closed, and behind the scenes we are delegating the chosen films to their respective selections. Again, we will have the Competition Selection (in season shorts), the Showcase Selection (out of season shorts or out of competition), and the Entrée Selection (dedicated to student films and possible first time filmmakers).
Don’t forget a curated collection of 20 feature films to bolster the discussions worldwide of the talented female filmmakers and their visions. There are heavy flavours of Iranian and Palestinian culture. Struggling mothers confronting their own and societal demons. Spirited children exploring the beauty and the brutal world around them. Very different versions of a toxic relationship straight from the shelves of literary classics.
The full line-up will be revealed in the next couple of weeks. The official 11th edition poster is also on its way. Following that we will release a downloadable festival program / screening guide. There will be an abundance of social media coverage, and some terrific content. We have gathered together some fresh festival volunteers, some returning friends of the festival and Filmotomy, as well as and endless film-loving community to be a part of.
