When I teamed up with Maia, I wanted to create a story that would resonate with so many people of what we had both been through in school and tell a story about the triumphs of overcoming bullying at school. This coming of age story was important for us both to tell, both of us implementing things that had happened to us during our school years.

Setting it in 2005 was particularly important to me as I was twelve years old then also, so I was able to implement a lot of things into that were key to that era – including MP3 players, Dream Matte Mousse and a retro boombox CD player.

This story is powerful and will move a lot of people. – – – – – thanks to Film Freeway

Opinion

This short film highlights important topics such as bulling, racism and ignorance. A
young schoolgirl listens to rap and dreams of owning a big stage when she has to face
the harsh realities of what it means to go to a predominately white school. She is able to
pick herself up and through rap teach everyone that it’s ok to be different. It’s a great
story about standing up for yourself. – – – – – by Chaniya Essome
